Biography

Amanda was born in 1858 in Weber county, Utah Territory, the daughter of John Taylor and Eleanor Burkett. John Taylor (1812 KY-1896 Utah) was the son of William Taylor and Elizabeth Patrick.Amanda’s mother Eleanor “Nellie” Burkett (1815 Ohio-1905 Utah) was the daughter of George Burkett, Jr. and Sarah Smith. Charles W. Chase and Amanda R. Taylor were married on 10 November 1878 in Ogden, Utah Territory.

In 1880, Charles Wells Chase and his wife Amanda and their son Adelbert were living near his father's farm in Ogden, Utah Territory. Charles was a railroad laborer. His father Wells was a farmer living with his wife, eleven children, his aunt Ellener Morse, and a boarder, John Allen. [1]

In 1900, the Chase family lived at 1557 Washington Ave., Ogden, Utah. All members of the household were born in Utah. All could read and write. The household included Charles W. Chase, 44, born in May 1866, a railroad day laborer, who owned their house without a mortgage; his wife of 21 years, Amanda R., 42, b. Feb. 1858, who had had three children, two of whom were living; their children, Adelbert L., 21, b. Sept. 1879, a day laborer; and Hazel E., b. Oct. 1883, in school.[2]

In 1910, the Chase family lived at 1563 Washington Ave., Ogden, Utah. All members of the household were born in Utah, except as noted. All of the adults could read and write. The household included Charles W. Chase, 54, a railroad flagman, who owned their house without a mortgage; his wife of 31 years (first marriage for both), Amanda R., 52, who had had three children, two of whom were living; their daughter Hazel E. Baskwell, 26, a widow, who worked in a millinery shop, who had had one child; her son Charlie Baskwell, 5; and a boarder, Christen Christensen, 31, born in Denmark, a bitter-maker at a creamery.[3]

In 1920, the Chase family lived at 1563 Washington Ave., Ogden, Utah. The household included Charles W. Chase, 63, a railroad flagman, who owned his house without a mortgage; his wife Amanda R., 61; and their grandson, Charlie C. Barkwell, 15. All were born in Utah.[4]

Charles Wells Chase, 67, and married, died in Dee Hospital, Ogden, Utah, on 27 October 1923. He died of cancer, which he suffered for seven years. He resided with his wife Amanda Rosine (Taylor) at 1615 Washington Ave., Ogden. Charles worked as a flagman for the Oregon Short Line railway. He was born 17 May 1856 in Ogden, Utah Territory, the son of Elisha Wells Chase and Jane McGary. The informant to his death was (his son) Adelbert L. Chase, 933 Binford Ave. Charles was buried at Ogden City Cemetery on 30 October 1923.[5]

Charles’ wife Amanda Rosine (Taylor), aged 84, died in her home at 1615 Washington Ave. Ogden, Utah, on 26 January 1943 in Ogden. She had been a widow for forty years. Amanda was born about 1859, the daughter of John Taylor (b. KY) and Eleanor Burkett. The informant to Amanda’s death was (her son) A. L. Chase, 933 Binford Ct.[6]

Amanda and her husband are buried in Ogden City Cemetery, Ogden, Utah. [7]
